The Tai Po Kau Yellow Trail (or Yellow Walk) in the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve is a challenging, 10 to 10.5 km loop that takes roughly 3.5 to 5 hours to complete. Famous for its lush forest cover, streams, and rich birdwatching opportunities, it involves roughly 336 to 750 meters of elevation gain, reaching up to 360 meters.

The Details

  1. Distance: ~10 to 10.5 km (approx. 5.3 to 6.5 miles)
  2. Time: 3.5 to 5 hours
  3. Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (features some steep climbs and uneven ground with tree roots and rocks)
  4. Terrain: Mostly shaded under a dense forest canopy

How to Get There

  1. Starting Point: Take bus 72, 72A, 73A, 74A, or minibus 28K from Tai Po Market MTR station.
  2. Drop-off: Get off at the "Chung Tsai Yuen" (松仔園 / Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve) bus stop.
  3. Trailhead: Walk up the concrete road past the gate marked "Tai Po Kau Nature Trail." At the first junction, turn left to join the Yellow and Brown walk markers.

Why Hike It?

Unlike many Hong Kong hikes that offer expansive coastal or peak views, the Yellow Trail is a full "jungle-like" forest walk. It is highly prized for its peaceful atmosphere, biodiversity, and the incredible birdsong that can be heard throughout the hike.
