All participants are responsible for their own safety, preparation, decisions, and conduct throughout any activity.
These Safety Guidelines are intended to help participants prepare appropriately and enjoy their outdoor experiences responsibly.
2. Know Your Limits
Before joining an event, carefully consider:
- Your fitness level
- Hiking experience
- Medical conditions
- Current health
- Ability to complete the advertised route
Do not participate if you are feeling unwell or believe the route exceeds your abilities.
Turn back if necessary.
There is no shame in making a safe decision.
3. Bring Proper Equipment
Participants should bring suitable equipment appropriate to the difficulty and conditions of the hike.
Recommended items include:

4. Hydration and Nutrition

- Monitor themselves for signs of dehydration or heat-related illness
Do not rely on shops, vending machines, or refill points being available.
5. Weather Awareness
Weather conditions can change unexpectedly.
Participants should check:
- Weather forecasts
- Rainstorm warnings
- Tropical cyclone warnings
- Extreme heat notifications
before attending an event.
Hong Kong Hikers Club may modify or cancel an event where weather conditions are considered unsuitable.
Participants should also make their own independent assessment of conditions.
6. Stay with the Group
For organized activities:
- Inform an organizer if leaving early.
- Inform an organizer if turning back.
- Avoid separating from the group without notifying others.
- Do not intentionally lose contact with fellow participants.
If you decide to continue independently, you do so at your own responsibility.
7. Respect Nature
Participants should:
- Leave no trace.
- Carry out all rubbish.
- Respect wildlife.
- Avoid damaging plants or natural environments.
- Follow Country Park regulations.
- Stay on established paths where possible.
Leave the trail in the same condition in which you found it.
8. Wildlife Awareness
Wildlife is part of Hong Kong's outdoor environment.
Participants may encounter:
- Monkeys
- Wild boar
- Snakes
- Insects
- Stray animals
Participants should:
- Never feed wildlife.
- Maintain a safe distance.
- Avoid approaching animals.
- Secure food properly.
9. Personal Responsibility
Each participant is responsible for:
- Their own decisions.
- Their own actions.
- Their personal equipment.
- Their physical condition.
- Their route choices.
Participation in any event remains voluntary.
Participants should exercise independent judgment at all times.
10. Medical Conditions
Participants with medical conditions should:
- Carry necessary medication.
- Inform a trusted companion if appropriate.
- Consider whether the planned activity is suitable.

- Heart conditions
Participants remain responsible for managing their own medical needs.
11. Family Hikes
For designated family events:
- Parents and guardians remain responsible for supervising their children at all times.
- Children must remain with their parent or guardian.
- Children should not be left with organizers or other participants.

12. Water Safety
Many routes include beaches, reservoirs, coastal areas, and ferry facilities.
Participants should:
- Exercise caution near water.
- Supervise children closely.

- Never assume lifeguards or rescue services are present.
Swimming and water activities are undertaken at the participant's own risk.
