Beaches, Sea Breezes, and a Perfect Day
There are hikes that challenge you physically, and there are hikes that remind you why we fell in love with the outdoors in the first place.
Our recent Discover Cheung Chau's Hidden Coastline adventure firmly belonged in the second category. With beautiful weather, excellent company, and one of Hong Kong's most charming island settings, the day delivered exactly what the Hong Kong Hikers Club is all about: exploring, connecting, and creating lasting memories together.
An Island Escape
The day began at Central Ferry Pier No. 5, where members gathered ahead of the ferry journey to Cheung Chau. Even before reaching the island, conversations were already flowing as familiar faces reunited and new members were welcomed into the group.
As Hong Kong's skyline gradually faded into the distance, anticipation grew for what promised to be an unforgettable day of exploration. Upon arrival, Cheung Chau immediately worked its magic. Unlike the pace of the city, life on the island feels different. Narrow streets, local cafés, fishing boats, bicycles, and the smell of the sea create an atmosphere that feels a world away from Central despite being only a short ferry ride from the city.

Along the Hidden Coastline
Our route took us beyond the busy village centre and onto the island's scenic coastal trails. Walking along the shoreline, we were treated to spectacular sea views, rugged rock formations, hidden coves, and beautiful beaches. The gentle terrain allowed everyone to relax and enjoy the surroundings while taking in the island's unique character. The island provided no shortage of stunning backdrops.
More Than Just a Walk
While Cheung Chau's scenery was undoubtedly the star of the show, the people made the day truly memorable. One of the best things about our events is seeing complete strangers start the day not knowing one another and finish it as friends.
Throughout the hike, members were connecting, new friendships were formed, future hiking plans were discussed, and plenty of laughter could be heard along the route. This sense of community is what makes every Hong Kong Hikers Club event special.
Beaches, Culture and Island Life
One of the unique aspects of Cheung Chau is the way it blends nature, culture, and history into a single experience. As we explored the island, we passed beaches, temples, traditional village areas, and some of the coastal landmarks that have made Cheung Chau one of Hong Kong's favourite weekend escapes.
The relaxed pace allowed everyone to fully appreciate the island's character and enjoy a side of Hong Kong that many visitors rarely experience.
The Perfect Finish
No adventure on the island would not be complete without a well-earned post-hike gathering. After completing our walk, many participants stayed to enjoy refreshments, food, and more conversation at the Cheung Chau beach. before making their way back to the city. These moments are often where some of the strongest connections are formed, and this occasion was no exception.
As the afternoon drew to a close and members boarded ferries back to Hong Kong Island, there was a common feeling among the group: Cheung Chau had once again delivered a fantastic day outdoors.
