Dragon's Back to Big Wave Bay Adventure

A Record Turnout, Stunning Views, and New Friendships on the Trail

Hong Kong's most famous ridge lived up to its reputation once again.

On 11 October, more than 35 members of the HK Hikers Club gathered at Shau Kei Wan before setting off for our Dragon's Back to Big Wave Bay Adventure. With clear skies, warm temperatures, steady sea breezes, and spectacular visibility, the conditions could hardly have been better for a day on the trail.

After arriving at To Tei Wan and beginning the ascent, the group gradually climbed towards the famous Dragon's Back ridge. As the trail opened up and the views appeared, the true scale of the event became apparent. Stretching along the ridgeline was a long line of HK Hikers Club members, winding their way across one of Hong Kong's most iconic landscapes.

It was a fantastic sight.

The weather certainly reminded us that summer had not entirely left Hong Kong behind. The sun was strong, temperatures were high, and the exposed sections of the ridge required plenty of water and regular breaks. Fortunately, a welcome breeze accompanied us for much of the journey and helped make the climb far more enjoyable.

Once on the ridge, participants were treated to the famous Dragon's Back panorama. To one side lay the sparkling waters of Tai Tam Bay, while ahead the trail rolled gracefully over green hills towards Big Wave Bay and the South China Sea. Everywhere you looked there were opportunities for photographs, and our members certainly made the most of them. Cameras and phones were constantly in use as hikers captured sweeping coastal vistas, dramatic ridgelines, and group photos against the backdrop of one of Hong Kong's most celebrated hiking routes.

Perhaps even more rewarding than the scenery was the atmosphere within the group.

As always, the HK Hikers Club brought together people from different backgrounds, professions, and hiking experience levels. Throughout the hike, conversations flowed naturally as members shared stories, exchanged travel ideas, discussed future adventures, and got to know one another. New friendships were formed, hiking partners were discovered, and familiar faces from previous events were reunited on the trail.

One of the most satisfying achievements of the day was that every participant completed the hike successfully. From the fastest hikers at the front of the group to those who preferred a more relaxed pace, everyone reached the finish safely and was accounted for. The group supported one another throughout the day, embodying the friendly and inclusive spirit that has become a hallmark of HK Hikers Club events.

Approximately three hours after setting out, we arrived at Big Wave Bay, where members took the chance to relax, enjoy refreshments, and reflect on the day's adventure. For many, the beachside finish provided the perfect ending to an unforgettable hike.

Dragon's Back is frequently described as one of the best urban hikes in the world, and after spending a day on the ridge surrounded by great company, breathtaking scenery, and a shared sense of achievement, it was easy to understand why.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this one of our best-attended events to date.

We look forward to seeing you on the next HK Hikers Club adventure.

Until then, keep exploring, keep connecting, and keep inspiring.
